US Presidential Debate: Analysis by Moïse Garçon and François Turnier”

On Saturday, September 14, 2024, Moïse Garçon and François Turnier were guests on Mosaique TV to analyze the presidential debate between Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump. The show offered an in-depth analysis of the face-off, marked by intense exchanges on crucial issues like the economy, abortion, and immigration.

Moïse Garçon praised the professionalism with which the debate began. François Turnier shared the same view, highlighting the quality of the first part of the debate. According to Turnier, Donald Trump has a winner’s mentality, even when he doesn’t win, always leaving the impression that he has emerged victorious. However, he also noted Kamala Harris’s professionalism, as did Moïse Garçon.

One of the points of regret expressed by Moïse Garçon concerns the lack of time devoted to economic issues during the debate. “The economy is extremely important,” he stated, lamenting that the candidates spent more time on the issue of abortion. Garçon also pointed out the degradation of the US healthcare system since the 1990s, a topic he believes is underrepresented in discussions.

Moïse Garçon also highlighted what he perceives as an imbalance in how the moderators managed the debate. He noted that Donald Trump’s statements were constantly verified by the moderators, while Kamala Harris’s were not. According to him, this imbalance affected the neutrality of the debate.

François Turnier emphasized the importance of immigration in the US, as well as economic issues. However, he reproached Trump for deviating from the topic several times. Turnier believes that the American public was satisfied with the debate, but notes that neither Donald Trump nor Kamala Harris prioritizes American interests. “Without immigrants, there would be no economy in the USA,” he declared, highlighting the importance of immigrant workers in the country’s economic fabric.

Turnier, while judging both candidates’ performances as satisfactory, leans towards Kamala Harris as the debate’s winner. Moïse Garçon, on the other hand, refused to designate a clear winner, estimating that both candidates managed their interventions well. However, he noted that Donald Trump seemed more convincing on certain points, particularly when discussing various topics.

Regarding abortion, Moïse Garçon judged that Kamala Harris had more solid positions than Donald Trump. He also noted that Harris avoids mentioning her immigrant status, as it could harm her chances of being elected. Trump, on the other hand, makes it a central point of his criticism, repeatedly highlighting this factor, which could work in his favor.

Moïse Garçon also highlighted the fact that, during Trump’s mandate, no major war was engaged, unlike during Biden’s presidency. This point could, according to him, strengthen Trump’s chances in the upcoming elections scheduled for November.

In conclusion, François Turnier noted that Democrats seem more inclined to collaborate with Haiti, while recognizing that economic and migration issues remain crucial for the future of US international relations. The debate, rich in emotions and divergent viewpoints, foreshadows an uncertain American election, where each candidate must strive to convince a divided electorate on crucial issues for the country’s future.
